Currently own a DR650, and it’s been an amazing first bike. Currently in the market for an 800 series bike and I’ve always loved the sharp look of a KTM, but the more I research the more I’m leaning towards BMW based on its reliability. Looking for a great second bike to get to put some serious miles on. However, at 575 pounds and nearly $22k, the GSA is an expensive and heavy motorcycle when compared to its nemesis, the KTM 1190 Adventure R, which at $16,799 and 519 pounds wet (6.1-gallon fuel tank) is substantially lighter and more affordable. Considering that you could be riding a KTM 1190 Adventure or BMW R1200GS for about $700-$1,500 more, it seems like a hard sell. On paper the KTM and BMW have superior performance, more advanced electronics and the price difference between them and the new Super Ténéré ES is not large.
At 642 lbs, the BMW R1200GS Adventure is a big bike indeed, but between the front suspension setup, the Dynamic ESA system, and spot-on comfort and ergonomics, the GS is incredibly precise and nimble when slaying corner after corner. Our guest test rider John Nave said, “It handled like the lightest 640-pound bike I’ve ever ridden.” 4.234. 4.159. Green font = category winner. Red font = category loser. So when all is said and done, the BMW F 850 GS is the winner, with an average rating of 4.234. The KTM 790 Adventure R was not far behind with an overall score of 4.159.
